About Us
The Michael King Writers' Centre is the first full writers' facility and literary centre in New Zealand. It was established by the Michael King Writers' Studio Trust in partnership with the North Shore City Council to honour the memory of author and historian, Michael King.
The centre is based in the historic Signalman's House on Mt Victoria in Devonport. It has accommodation and a working studio for a resident writer. The trust hopes to offer two or three paid residencies each year - one for six months and two short-term residencies, depending on funding. Applications for these residencies are invited each year.
The centre also has low-cost accommodation for visiting authors, who need to stay in Auckland to carry out research or who need a quiet place to work. It can be used as a venue for literary events. The centre is building a collection of resources, including memorabilia about Michael King and other prominent New Zealand writers.
From time to time the centre organises workshops about different aspects of writing.
